Formula & assumptions
Break-even Price = Fixed Cost Base ÷ (1 − Percentage Fee Rate).
- Fixed Cost Base includes product, shipping/fulfillment, packaging, advertising/acquisition, other fixed and fixed transaction costs.
- This is a zero-profit threshold, not target-margin pricing. Use Product Pricing Calculator when you need a price for a chosen profit margin.
- Percentage fees are modeled as a percentage of selling price; rates at or above 100% return a safe zero result.
Frequently asked questions
What is a break-even price?
A break-even price is the selling price at which revenue covers the costs included in the calculation, leaving approximately zero profit.
How is break-even selling price calculated?
The calculator divides the fixed cost base by one minus the combined percentage fee rate. This accounts for fees that increase as selling price increases.
Why can't I just add the percentage fee to my costs?
A percentage fee changes with selling price, so its final dollar amount is not known until the price is solved. Adding it as a fixed cost would understate the required price.
What costs should I include?
Include product cost, shipping or fulfillment, packaging, fixed transaction charges and other per-sale fixed costs that apply to the sale.
What are percentage-based fees?
They are fees calculated as a share of selling price, such as a marketplace referral fee, payment processing percentage or affiliate commission.
What happens if my percentage fees are 0%?
The break-even price equals the fixed cost base because no cost changes as the selling price changes.
What happens if percentage fees reach 100%?
There is no finite selling price that can cover costs when percentage fees consume 100% or more of revenue. The calculator returns a safe zero result and shows a short explanation.
Is break-even price the same as product cost?
No. Break-even price includes product cost plus every other fixed cost and the percentage fee that applies at the calculated selling price.
Can I use this for Amazon, Etsy, eBay or Shopify?
Use it for a simple estimate. When a marketplace has tiers, minimum fees or category-specific rules, use the relevant Profivexa marketplace calculator instead.
Does break-even price include profit?
No. Break-even means profit is approximately zero. Add a profit target with the Product Pricing Calculator when setting a selling price.
